Comet 46P Wirtanen
This Comet just past by earth last night and is making its way around the sun. Comet 46P was 0.1au close to earth making it visible enough to see with binoculars even with the moon at 50%. The Pocatello Astronomical Society had a potluck at my house for our monthly meeting. Denver Ham is our comet guy and was touting about this comet that was close to us. We had some patchy clouds that night Dec 12. I told him lets go have a look. So we stepped outside with our binoculars and I was able to just pick it out with adverted vision. Last year March 2017 I tried finding comet 41P Tuttle in my backyard but I wasn't able to find it in my 12" telescope until I went to a dark location. At Massacre Rocks I was able to see it at around 9th apparent magnitude. I was excited that we could see comet 46P in the backyard with moonlight. Last night I was easily able to see comet 46P. I was even able to see it in my finder scope. This comet reached about 2.5 apparent magnitude. This is my first comet that I have photographed. I took 2 minute sub frames. The comet had noticeable movement from one frame to the next. Because of this I was only able to use one frame so there is a lot of background noise. It is really cool to see the green gasses coming off the rock. I might put another picture together with multiple single frames put together so you can see the movement of the comet. I was surprised how fast this comet moves.
Well Done!
